ATCRCS - Chuck McElroy

I'm slowly making my way through the signed ATCRCS cards I've accumulated over the years. I'm sitting right around 150.

Today's card features Chuck McElroy who was a childhood favorite of mine. Not because he was the best on the team, but because my brother and I enjoyed saying his name. The things you latch onto as a kid....

McElroy spent 13 seasons in the big leagues spread out among 9 different ball clubs, including the South Siders, making him one of (currently) 181 players to do so. In his time in Chicago, he was mostly a middle reliever, appearing in 192 games between 1991-1993. He racked up a record of 12-11 with a 3.06 ERA.

Unfortunately for McElroy, he was the type of pitcher who was brought in when the Cubs were losing to eat up some innings. The Cubs record in games he pitched was 64-128. Yikes.

This card was picked up through a private signing I read about on SCN sometime last summer.

McElroy's son, CJ was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2011 and is currently their AA team, the Springfield Cardinals.

  1. I got to see CJ play in P'town with the Chiefs. I never did see Chuck at the ballpark though. Nice auto!
