August 16, 2015 - Wilmington Blue Rocks @ Potomac Nationals

As if I hadn't seen enough baseball in early August, less than a week after we returned from our trip, my older son and I decided to take in a Potomac Nationals game, our nearest ballclub.

The main reason we were going was for the Ryan Zimmerman bobblehead giveaway. I don't particularly collect bobbleheads, especially non-Cubs, but pre-Bryce Harper and pre-Stephen Strasburg, Zimmerman was the face of the Nats franchise. I was easily able to flip one of the two that we got to cover the afternoon's tickets and food. Score!

Photo borrowed from eBay, too lazy to take my own
This would have been the first game of the season for me without Cubs ties but as an added bonus, when I went to the team website, I noticed former Cubs utility man Reed Johnson was making a rehab start. That didn't give me enough time to make an ATCRCS card, but luckily I had a binder of "favorite" Cubs cards that wasn't tucked away with the rest of my collection. I managed to find a pair of Johnson cards to try to get signed.

When we got there, it was crowded! I mean it was a Sunday game, with fireworks afterwards, and a bobblehead giveaway but one of my favorite things about this stadium is that it was rarely half capacity, let alone crowded. While waiting in line to get in, we figured it out. Along with Reed Johnson, it had also been announced that Denard Span was making a rehab start. He's a pretty big local fan favorite.

Once I saw how crowded it was, I put my cards away. Normally autographs are fairly easy to get at this level and in this stadium, but with crowds, all that goes out the window.

We walked around a bit, had a good conversation comparing this stadium to the ones we had just visited and noted the differences between the various levels. After player warmups, I saw Reed Johnson and Denard Span make their way from the outfield towards the dugout and they both stopped to sign autographs. I debated a good minute or so on whether I wanted to make the walk over to where they were and try to get in there.

With nothing to lose, I decided to head on over. I found a spot right between where Johnson was and where he had to go and waited. I would guess he signed 20-25 autographs before I had sidled up and he was about 4-5 people away from me. I can't believe how well I timed it, as I stood there for only a minute or two and got these two beauties:

This one is from my custom team set I made back in 2012, when the Cubs set a team record for players used in a season. I didn't notice until I scanned and cropped the cards, but he included his #4, which he wears with the Nationals. As you can see in the photo and on the card, he wore #5 on the Cubs. Oh well, no big deal. I've made some headway with that set over the years. I should figure out who I have and who I still need one of these days.

And this card from 2012 Topps is just a fantastic shot. I have no idea how close those gulls actually are to Johnson, but this card was already one of my favorites before it got signed. The unsigned version will definitely be one of the Cubs representatives in my horizontal frankenset!

Two weeks later, I couldn't tell you what the final score was, though I do know the home team lost. It just kind of reinforces to me that while I would like to visit other stadiums/teams in a similar fashion to my recent road trip, I just don't have as much of a vested interested in the game if the Cubs aren't playing.

This marked the 8th stadium I visited this summer, for my 10th overall game. That reminds me, I went to three of the four games when the Cubs came to DC to play the big league Nats. I have some stories from that series to relay as well!

More Luis Salazar...

Well, as I figured would happen, my weekend turned out much too busy to make the big semi-annual local card show. I helped someone move on Friday. All day Saturday was taken up by my sons' Little League Opening Day parade and a game for each of them. Both won their games and each had a clutch hit. Nice!

The Cubs were beating the Braves but I got home just in time to watch the bullpen unravel and the Upton brothers destroy our closer on WGN. Not nice!

Sunday was the day I thought I'd be able to sneak away for a bit and snag some good deals from dealers who didn't want to lug as much stuff home with them but it was not meant to be. We had some out of town company over (not that it wasn't great to see them, it was) and they weren't the type to hang out at a card show. Later in the afternoon though, I did manage to catch the tail end of Potomac National/Lynchburg Hillcats game. The Nationals were leading but gave up 7 late inning runs to fall 11-6.

Some of you may have been following this blog long enough to remember, I had pretty good success getting some autographs from former Cub Luis Salazar since he has been the manager of the Hillcats. For those who haven't, I recapped it some here and here.

Since I missed the beginning of the game, my older son and I decided to wait after the game. It was a getaway day so all the players filed out of the locker room and into the awaiting bus. Of course, the manager was the last one out but he signed a quick one each and then he and we were on our separate ways.

The first card was one of my new ATCRCS/A&G hybrids. I had found a nice color picture to use a while back (but after I had already gotten the regular ATCRCS card signed) so I put it to use. I haven't whipped up a back for it yet but will soon.

The second card was a 1987 Topps Traded. The guy who has been helping me at the Sun Times shows in Chicago is working on getting the entire 1987 Topps and Topps Traded set signed so I thought it was time to repay the favor. I checked his list and this Salazar card was on it.

I do need to add Salazar to the Boys of Zimmer poster I just showed off but I didn't have time to get it printed yet. Hopefully next time he's in town!

Another Day at the Ballpark

Last Monday I did a write up on our day at the ballpark. Last night we decided to hit another game because Mondays are $1 tickets and $1 hot dogs. Can't feed and entertain the family for much less than that these days, right?

Armed with a Lynchburg Hillcats team set and Carolina League Top Prospects set we had just picked up on Sunday at the card show, we did pretty well. But to be honest, my son did most of the work with those as I had a mission of my own. Here's his haul, mostly pregame with a couple in-game from pitchers who were charting pitches in the stands behind home plate.

Top Prospects Set:
Nick Ahmed, Cody Martin, Edward Salcedo, David Freitas
A couple more P-Nats we didn't get last week:
Shane McCatty, Neil Holland, David Freitas, Robbie Ray x2, Adam Olrychowski
Lynchburg Hillcats (Single-A affiliate of the Braves)
Nick Ahmed, Caleb Brewer, Matt Chaffee, Dimasther Delgado, Chris Garcia, Juan Jaime
Cody Martin, David Rohm, Edward Salcedo, Braeden Schlehuber, Gus Schlosser, Blaine Sims
Matt Weaver, Luis Salazar, Derek Botelho, Ty Cobbs, Bobby Moore, Jason Curry

I wish more Major Leaguers signed autographs as much as their Minor League counterparts did but I think I did pretty well with my own mission. Last week, I said I didn't have enough time to process my ATCRCS card of Xavier Nady to bring to the game with me. Surprisingly, he was still with the team rehabbing so I came prepared this time. Nady has had a goatee and mustache every time I've seen him before so when he came out clean shaven, I wasn't sure it was him right away. I confirmed his number and called him over. He took a good look at the card but didn't say anything as he signed it.

My first in-person signed ATCRCS card
Not only did he sign the card, but I forgot to mention last week that my older son also caught a foul all off the bat of Nady. So we brought that with us this week and asked him to sign that too.

My mission did not end there though because across the diamond managing the Hillcats was another former Cub, Luis Salazar. You might have noticed above that my son got his team set card signed. Well, I walked away with a signed ATCRCS card and a 1991 Topps Desert Shield card for my collections so as far as I'm concerned, mission accomplished!

My 2nd in-person ATCRCS card and 25th overall!
1991 Topps Desert Shield Luis Salazar

That brings my signed collection of 1991 Topps Desert Shield cards to....drumroll.....two. Oh well, slow and steady wins the race, right?

Potomac Nationals Game on Sunday

I mentioned the other day that for his birthday, my oldest son, now a teenager, wanted to go to a Potomac Nationals game. His mother and brother bailed (because it was a scorching 103 degrees at first pitch) but they set up a nice party for our return.

We only had a few cards to get signed but when we got to the stadium, we saw they had released the team set so I shelled out $12 for that. After thumbing through the set, a lot of the guys have already been shuffled around to other teams which is always disappointing but he still did pretty well with the guys that were there. He got 17 of the 31 cards signed from the set plus a few we brought with us.

Adrian Sanchez, Erick Fernandez, JP Ramirez
Kevin Keyes, Rob Wort, Trevor Holder
Michael Taylor, Blake Kelso, Matthew Grace
Matt Swynenburg, Ryan Demmin, Brian Rupp
Ricky Hague, Francisco Soriano, Joe Testa
Chris Michalak, Randolph Oduber
JP Ramirez, 2011 Heritage Minors
Rick Hague
These four Rick Hague cards complete the DAV sponsored giveaway from last year. He had a season ending injury just before the set was released and was sent home. Finally finished!

Hitting coach and former Washington National Marlon Anderson

And finally, the highlight of the day for me (aside from you know, spending quality time with my son on his birthday, blah blah blah), former Cub Xavier Nady.

2010 & 2011 Topps Xavier Nady
Unfortunately, I didn't have time to print, cut out and glue together his ATCRCS card because he had just been sent down that day. But I will have it ready for the next time!

Well-wisher Wednesday - Sandy Leon

The normally scheduled Want List Wednesday (and Cubs-themed blog) will be replaced today with get well wishes for Nationals catcher Sandy Leon.

I am a Cubs fan, through and through, no doubt about it. However, I live in Northern Virginia and my local minor league team is the Potomac Nationals, the Single-A Advanced affiliate of the Washington Nationals. My sons have taken more and more of an interest in the sport so we attended 15-20 games last season. Hard to beat $1 Mondays where tickets and hot dogs are just a buck. It's even more difficult to keep the boys from falling prey to all the Nationals hype in the area but I have to admit, the Nats are playing some exciting baseball right now.

My boys became interested in autographs last year too and although most of these guys don't have their own baseball cards yet, the team had a DAV giveaway set in the first month and then sold another team set midway through the season.

The Potomac Nationals were even the guinea pigs for my experimentation with custom cards as you can see below.

Fast forward to this past Monday. As I drove home from work I was listening to the Nationals pregame show on the radio. They announced that Sandy Leon was making his major league debut in place of Wilson Ramos who had just suffered a season ending ACL injury. That was kind of exciting (no offense to Ramos) because I had spoken with Leon several times last season after the games while my kids were getting autographs. While I wouldn't go so far to say he could pick me out of a crowd, I think he would remember the cards I made as he seemed to like them. My wife had spoken with his wife or girlfriend and one of my sons played catcher last season so he was one of his favorite players on the team.

I called my wife and she couldn't find the game on our basic cable (Orioles game was on instead) so we decided to try out the new sports bar/restaurant that opened up a couple blocks away. Not only were there big TVs all around the restaurant, but each booth had its own personal TV. Great start!

We watched the Nats take an early lead but Leon struck out in his first Major League at bat. A little disappointing, but hey the Nats are still looking good. A 3-run rally in the bottom of the third that included Bryce Harper's first Major League homer run ended with Leon on deck. No problem...

And then in the top of the 4th...

...a play at the plate. Leon's right foot gets caught up underneath him as Chase Headley barrels into him. Not a dirty play but c'mon, only about an hour into his debut? Luckily it is just a high ankle sprain and he'll be out for about a month but not only does he have to heal and rehab, he then has to fight his way back up the depth chart. It's absolutely heartbreaking to think that this could be his entire MLB career. You hear about those guys who only make it for a cup of coffee but this one hit home.

What started as an exciting dinner, watching the game turned into utter disbelief. I hope Leon can stick with it, and even as a Cub fan, I'll be pulling for him.
